Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Sky Sports reported that the Saints and AC Milan have made enquiries to Nottingham Forest over the availability of Matty Cash. The 22-year-old has enjoyed a fine campaign at the Forest Ground this term having been transformed into a right-back by Sabri Lamouchi, scoring two goals and registering four assists in 27 Championship appearances.
Cash made 30 appearances at right-midfield last season, but 24 of his outings in the current campaign have come at right-back as he operates in a new role under Lamouchi this year.
Defensively, the Forest No.11 also makes an impressive three tackles and 2.9 clearances per game.
Ralph Hasenhuttl actually attempted to sign Cash while he was manager of RB Leipzig back in January 2017, offering £6m to Forest for the player when he was still a teenager.
Sky Sports mention that the Saints are keen to strengthen in both full-back positions this month, while they are also looking at Kyle Walker-Peters and Joe Bryan of Tottenham and Fulham respectively.
Right now, Hasenhuttl has Cedric and Yan Valery to choose from in the right-back area, although the Portugal international has revealed his desire to leave at the end of the season while Valery hasn’t appeared since November with a viral infection.
Let’s see how the Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to the Cash news…
To kick off the discussion, this supporter with the username ‘Saint Harris’ said that they’d rather have Joakim Maehle – a Danish right-back who has also been linked – although they’d “take” Cash if the rumours are true.
This fan also added that the Forest man is “versatile” and “decent at crossing” while he’s also a “good tackler and puts in the work needed”.
Elsewhere, Ross and Jem both expressed a desire to see this deal materialise.
Ross said that he hopes Southampton “sign this guy up” as he has “seen good stuff” from Cash, while Jem said that it “would be a class signing”.
Meanwhile, ‘Ralph’s Revolution’ was singing a different tune to the aforementioned two supporters, calling Cash an “average player” to back up Valery, while also adding that it would be “underwhelming”.
Lastly, Max and Dan were left excited by this news.
Max said that Cash has “a lot of potential and time to improve” before mentioning that it “could be a shrewd signing”.
Someone’s got to own them: Who do these incredibly unwanted PL records belong to?
Also, Dan simply said “yes please” after hearing of the news.
In other news, these Southampton fans have sung the praises of this player who “does a job no other player in the squad can seem to master”…
